It is with deep regret that we inform you that the President of Progressive Floor Covering, Inc., John Spinella passed away suddenly on Tuesday May 13, 2008. In light of his passing, we at Progressive Floor Covering are committed to continuing the practices that Mr. Spinella cultivated and conducting business in a manner that is reflective of his personal and professional philosophy. It is the intent of everyone here to personally dedicate all efforts to ensure that Progressive Floor covering conducts business as usual and to maintain the level of integrity and professionalism that has allowed this company to flourish for almost 20 years. Among these efforts is to retain all key employees, to maintain current customer accounts and actively pursue new business under the direction of John's oldest daughter, Nichole Chiffriller.
John Spinella's and Progressive Floor Covering's past history is as follows:
Mr. Spinella had extensive successful trade experience in the industry. The company’s primary source of business has been through public funded projects, more specifically public schools and municipal, county and federal buildings. The geographic area of its market principally includes all of Southern California. The company has grown steadily through its history until recent industry and market conditions changed favorably for the company. As a result of these changes, Progressive Floor Covering, Inc. has found itself in a unique position to dramatically expand its business at a much-accelerated rate.
As the state wide Worker’s Compensation issues intensified and employer costs consequently increased, the threat of employee litigation, and increased financial risk to the employer became an increasing burden. As a result, many businesses in this industry have elected to not remain in the labor services market. However, because of Progressive’s experience, expertise and skill in managing complex labor issues, the company saw this development as an opportunity to gain greater market share. As a result, the company has not only elected to remain in this sector, but has subsequently managed to thrive in this new economic climate. John Spinella had been in the carpet labor business for more than thirty years. Originally, Mr. Spinella’s father established Progressive Floor Covering in 1962 in New York City. In 1970, Mr. Spinella began working with his father, and in 1976 he became a full partner. In 1978 they became union installers for other labor shops in Manhattan. Mr. Spinella expanded his knowledge of managing labor requirements on a large scale through thirteen years as a union foreman. At the age of twenty-one, he was in the position of executing the jobsite management of individual crews of up to thirty union installers per project. In this position, he oversaw all quality and cost control management issues and had total accountability for the bottom line of each project. Based upon this success, he decided to open his own labor shop in Southern California in 1989. Over the past fifteen years he had built a company that had grown from the humble beginning of two employees and annual revenue of one hundred thousand dollars to a company that now numbers more than fifty employees with an annual revenue of over five-million dollars.
Integral to this success is the quality, loyalty, perfectionism, dedication and hard work of his work force. This is the direct result of Mr. Spinella’s extensive labor background, his leadership skills, and his willingness to work side-by-side with his staff and in that process to consistently lead by example. Currently, Progressive Floor Covering has an installation force of more than 50 highly skilled union laborers, through whom is reflected his sense of personal pride and integrity. These personal values permeate through every level of the organization.
